|Schaffer earns WAC honor|
DENVER - Two University of Idaho track and field athletes reaped the rewards of an impressive weekend on Tuesday, as the Western Athletic Conference named Barry Britt and Lauren Schaffer its Verizon Men's and Women's Track Athletes of the Week for the week of Apr. 11-17.
Junior Lauren Schaffer (Boise, Idaho/Timberline HS) claimed her first weekly honor of the season and the second of her career after posting back-to-back top times in the 800m. She took ninth in the University/Open division of the event at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday with a time of 2:08.08, which was, at the time, a season-best and was the second-fastest of her career.
Less than 24 hours later, she ran the 800m again at the Beach Invitational, and led from start to finish with a career-best time of 2:06.53. That time is the fastest in the WAC since 2007, and is the second-fastest in Idaho history. After the weekend, she sits at 16th in the NCAA and 10th in the West Region in the event.
Schaffer's one previous WAC Athlete of the Week honor came during the 2010 indoor season after she won the Vandal Indoor 800m in 2:11.77, which was, at the time, the fastest of her career and third-fastest in Idaho indoor history.
The honors are the third and fourth outdoor WAC weekly honors by Idaho track and field athletes this season. Junior Markus Geiger claimed the men's track honor on Mar. 29, while sophomore Liga Velvere was last week's women's track honoree.
Idaho's next foray onto the track will be on Saturday, Apr. 23, at Washington State's Cougar Invitational at Pullman, Wash.
