MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Idaho junior soccer player Chelsea Small was honored for the second year in a row on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-West Region team Friday.

Small, a forward from Solana Beach, Calif. (Torrey Pines HS), was a Third-Team honoree after leading Idaho with 10 goals, four assists and 24 points on the season. She netted two game-winners and helped lead the Vandals to their first Western Athletic Conference Tournament victory and semifinal round appearance.

It’s fantastic,” Idaho head coach Pete Showler said of the award. “The teams in the West did really well both regionally and nationally this year, so for a player from Idaho and the WAC to be recognized among that group is really great.”

During the season, Small became Idaho’s all-time leader in goals (31), points (74) and shots (313), and extended her school record for career game-winners to 12. Despite attempting a career-low 91 shots, which still led the WAC in 2011, Small posted a career-best .110 shooting percentage and her second-highest single-season points total.

“It’s down to Chelsea’s hard work and the work of the players around her, and she got her just reward,” Showler said.

She was honored last season as an NSCAA Second-Team All-West Region selection. Small is the first three-time first-team all-WAC honoree in Idaho history and was the 2009 WAC Freshman of the Year, 2010 WAC Offensive Player of the Year and 2011 Preseason WAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Small’s award gives Idaho its third such honor in the last two seasons. In addition to Small’s second-team selection last year, midfielder Jill Flockhart was a 2010 Third-Team honoree.
