DENVER - After going a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles over the weekend, helping the Vandals to a 2-1 record, Idaho women's tennis player Almudena Sanz was selected as the Verizon Western Athletic Conference women's tennis Player of the Week.

"It's great, Almu is a real fighter," Idaho women's tennis coach Dan Pollock said. "She never gives up on the court, she always gives 100 percent. If we can find a way for her to work on her concentration, so she can concentrate from start to finish, she's going to be a really good college player."

Sanz, a sophomore from Oviedo, Spain, went 5-1 last weekend, including an impressive 3-0 in No. 2 singles play. Sanz, who is in her first year of playing college tennis in the USA, claimed singles victories over Colorado State's Lauren Mulhern, 7-6, 6-3, Northern Colorado's Elizabeth Tapia, 6-2, 6-2, and Wyoming's Simona Synkova, 6-2, 3-6, (10-7).

Sanz, along with partner Sophie Vickers, added two wins at No. 3 doubles, against CSU and UNC. Sanz was then bumped up to play No. 1 doubles with Vicky Lozano, and in the pair's first match together, they were given the task of facing UW's Synkova and Veronica Popovici, who won the regional championship and a round at nationals earlier this season. Sanz and Lozano performed admirably against the duo, falling in a tiebreaker, 9-8.

"When we recruited her we were hoping she was going to have a huge impact on the middle of the lineup," Pollock added. "Obviously with a few sicknesses and injuries and health issues she's moved up, but she has stepped up and played really big for a first-year player, and that bodes really well for next year."

"Each match I'm feeling more and more comfortable and have more confidence," Sanz said. "I have to be focused on my match until it's finished, then go support the team."

The Vandals will return to action on Saturday as they take on BYU in Pullman, Wash., at 10 a.m. before facing LCSC in Lewiston, Idaho at 4:30 p.m.
