DENVER – University of Idaho junior thrower Mike Marshall was honored on Tuesday by the Western Athletic Conference as its Verizon Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for his effort over the weekend at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge.

Marshall, a second-year Vandal from Yakima, Wash. (Yakima Valley CC), hit a 10-foot personal best to win the men’s javelin throw on Saturday with a WAC-leading mark of 217-9 (66.38m). His mark is the best in the WAC so far this season by a two-foot, six-inch margin over teammate Ugis Svazs and ranks 20th in the West Region and 39th in the NCAA so far this season.

It marks the second week in a row Marshall has hit a personal best in the event, and this week’s toss moves him up to fourth all-time at Idaho in the event. After hitting a five-foot best two weeks ago at the Northwest Scoring Clash, Marshall has added a total of 15 feet to his previous best in his last two meets.

The honor is the first of his career and is the fourth for Idaho so far this outdoor season. The Vandals have earned the last three Men’s Field Athlete of the Week awards between Marshall, sophomore Andrey Levkiv and senior Andrew Blaser, in addition to senior Erica Digby’s Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honor last week.

Marshall is the sixth different Vandal man to earn the weekly honor this year between indoor and outdoor track and field.

Idaho track and field will be in action this week at the California Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays and Beach Invitational. Competition starts on Wednesday and runs through Sunday.
