|Vandal Jamboree Wraps Up|
Moscow, Idaho – Everything came together at the right time as a small group of athletes competed Friday and Saturday on their home turf at the Dan O’Brian Track and Field Complex.
Senior Liga Velvere highlighted the day for the Vandals posting a season-best time in the 400m hurdles. Her time of 58.64 improves her second-place rank in the WAC, ranks 13th in the NCAA West and 28th in the NCAA so far this season.
“Liga had a great race today even though the conditions weren’t idea,” Wayne Phipps, Idaho director of track and field said. “She was facing some pretty big wind on the home stretch, but for her to run that fast in those conditions is very impressive.”
The duo of Jesse Villines and Blake Gerling both posted personal-best marks in the 400m hurdles. Villines lead the way with a time of 52.68 while Gerling finished not far behind in 53.30. Villines time moves his into the NCAA West top-48, ranking him 42nd.
“It was a main goal today for Jesse to move into the top-48,” Phipps said. “For him to post that mark with some pretty stiff winds was pretty impressive.”
In the women’s shot put, sophomore Johanna Hocketstaller led a 1-2 Idaho finish with a season-best 49-3 (15.01m). Senior Kristine Leonard was second with a career-best 48-10.75 (14.90m). Leonard than went on to finish first in the discus throw (154-5, 47.08m) and post a career-best mark in the hammer throw (175-8, 53.55m).
Also key for the Vandals was Jerrica Hauck posting a career-best 12-7.5 (3.85m) in the pole vault and senior Alyssa Covington who had a strong day in the long jump posting a season-best 19-8.75 (6.01m).

“I feel really good about this weekend,” Phipps said. “We had a lot of personal bests being hit and we are healthy, which are the two things we are looking for.”
The Vandals will be back in action this week at the WAC Championships hosted at Arlington, Texas. The meet kicks off Wednesday with Heptathlon and Decathlon action, while the individual events begin Friday.
