|Three Vandals headed to NCAA Championship Meet|
EUGENE, Ore. – University of Idaho Director of Track and Field Wayne Phipps has a good feeling about what the three Vandals who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship Meet can achieve this week.
“If things continue to go as well as they have been going the last few weeks,” Phipps said, “they have a shot at being All-Americans for us. All three have been improving as the season has gone along.”
Heading to the four-day meet at the University of Oregon are Liga Velvere, a 400-meter hurdler from Saldus, Latvia; Ugis Svazs, a javelin thrower from Kuldiga, Latvia, and homegrown pole vaulter Jeremy Klas from Moscow.
Svazs is the highest seeded of the three with his qualifying throw of 237 feet giving him the sixth-best mark of the finalists. Klas cleared 17 feet, 6½ inches for the 12th-best qualifying height, and Velvere had a 58.40 for the 19th fastest time into the finals.
The meet begins Wednesday and concludes Saturday. Klas competes at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the pole vault with Velvere running in the 400-hurdle preliminaries at 6 p.m. Should she advance to the final, she will run again at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Svazs competes in the javelin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
