PULLMAN, Wash – University of Idaho track and field finished off the inaugural meet of its 2014 indoor season with multiple individual victories and career-best marks Saturday at the WSU Open.

The Vandal men led the way with five first-place finishes and two career-best marks.

Idaho newcomer Emmanuel Panchol produced strong marks in his first meet as a Vandal. Panchol earned his first individual victory in the triple jump with a mark of 46-00.0 (14.02m) and took second in the high jump with a mark of 6-07.0 (2.01m).

“I was very impressed with our jumpers today,” Idaho director of track and field/cross country Wayne Phipps said. “Panchol led the group and had a great first meet as a Vandal.”

Also for the men, senior Andrew Bloom took first in the 400m with a time of 50.11, while junior teammate Matt Sullivan placed first in the pole vault with a mark of 16-08.75 (5.10m) and senior Andrey Levkiv finished first in the shot put with a career-best heave of 55-05.75 (16.91m).

“Andrey returned from an injury and looked like he hadn’t missed a day,” Phipps said. “That was the highlight of the meet for me.”

On the women’s side, senior Karlene Hurrel led the way with a second place finishes in the 60m (7.95) and 200m (25.53).  After being injured for the 2013 season, junior Taylor Hewett returned with a fourth place finish in the 600m with a time of 1:38.9. Redshirt freshman Adara Winder took 3rd in the shot put with a mark of 41-10.0 (12.75m) followed by junior Molly Meyers in fourth with a toss of 40-11.5 (12.48m).

“We didn’t compete very many women today,” Phipps said. “But I thought all of our newcomers to the team did a great job in their first collegiate meet.”

Next up on the schedule for the Vandal track and field is next week’s home meets on Friday and Saturday. The team will host the Idaho Collegiate on Friday starting at 11 a.m. (PT)., and then the Idaho Open on Saturday, starting at 8:30 a.m.
