MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Idaho track and field opened up the Western Athletic Conference Championship competition on its home turf Wednesday with the pentathlon and a portion of the heptathlon.

In the pentathlon, freshman Taylor Sheppard finished in eighth with 2,979 points and freshman Wednesday Walton placed 13th with 2,835 points. Sheppard’s eighth place finish earns the Vandals their first team point of the meet.

“I was really pleased with both of their performances, Wednesday has never done a pentathlon before today, and up until a couple weeks ago some of the events – I think she has a ton of potential in the event,” Director of track & field/cross country Wayne Phipps said. “This was Taylor’s second pentathlon and for her to score as a true freshman in her first conference meet is just fantastic”

After day one of the heptathlon, senior Tyler Bennett leads the way for the Vandals in second with 2,616 points, followed by fellow senior Colin Briggs in fourth with 2,590 points and sophomore Drew Thompson in fifth with 2,563. Tomorrow’s portion of the heptathlon will include the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m.

“Tyler had a great day, as well as Colin despite being hurt for a few weeks and Drew is coming up with some really big performances.” Phipps said. “I am really happy with the way we are in the first day and our second day is going to be even better.”

The Vandals are back in action tomorrow beginning at 10:30 a.m. (PT) with the continuation of the heptathlon. Field events are slated to start at 1 p.m. with the men’s portion of the weight throw. Running events will begin at 4 p.m. with the women’s portion of the mile.
