TEMPE, Ariz – The University of Idaho track and field team produced a top-10 mark, earned one individual win, and posted two NCCA qualifying marks Saturday at the Sun Angel Classic.
Junior Matt Sullivan leaped to a height of 17-7 (5.36m) in the premiere section of the pole vault, moving him into second-best all-time at Idaho. His mark ranks first in the WAC so far this season and advances him to the first round of the NCAA.
Senior Alycia Butterworth added a victory for the day with a time of 10:27.32 in the 3k steeplechase, senior teammate Holly Stanton Browning followed in second with a time of 10:59.22. Butterworth’s time ranks first in the WAC so far this season and qualifies for the first round of the NCAA. Sophomore Marquita Palmer placed second in the 800m with a career-best time of 2:13.09, while senior Karlene Hurrel took fourth in the 100m with a wind-aided time of 12.24.
Freshman Adara Winder took the second-place spot in the shot put with a heave of 47-1 (14.35m), while freshman Ana Pardo followed in fifth with a toss of 45-10.5 (13.98m). In the premier section of the javelin throw, sophomore Tayler Feinauer placed seventh with a mark of 137-10 (42.01m).
“Despite the extremely hot and windy tempatures, our throwers had an excellent meet,” Director of track and field/cross country Wayne Phipps said.
On the men’s side, freshman Arphaxad Carroll finished third in the long jump with a leap of 22-2.5 (6.77m), and placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 47-6.5 (14.49m). Junior Derek Haas took the second place spot in the javelin with a mark of 198-11 (60.62m), while senior teammate Andrey Levkiv placed fourth in the shot put with a heave of 53-11 (16.43m).
Junior Ben Ayesu-Attah placed sixth in the premiere portion of the 400m with a time of 48.06 and senior Kyle Rothwell added another sixth-place finish in the premier section of the hammer throw (194-5, 59.25m).
University of Idaho alumna and jumps coach Angela Whyte won the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.11. This mark ranks 10th best in the world so far this season.
The Vandals have a full slate of action next week beginning Thursday with the CSULA Twilight Open at Los Angeles, Calif., the Whitworth Twilight Invite at Spokane, Wash., and the Mt. Sac Relays at Walnut, Calif
