The University of Idaho women's golf team signed three players for the 2011-12 season to add depth to a promising young team, coach Lisa Johnson announced Thursday.

Joining the Vandals are freshmen Leilanie Kim (Pacific Academy, Surrey, B.C.), Kaitlyn Oster (Liberty High School, Hillsboro, Ore.) and Mary Sweeney (Woodbury High School, Woodbury, Minn.).

"We look for Leilanie, Mary and Kaitlyn to make an immediate impact next year," coach Lisa Johnson said. "They will add depth and help foster even more friendly competition on our young team.  We believe that all three will be outstanding college players."

Leilanie Kim

Kim already has established herself as a top junior golfer as a member of the 2010 Canadian National Team. She currently is ranked 57th among the class of 2011 by Golfweek and is 118th overall.

Among her accomplishments are winning the FCWT TPC Las Vegas Challenge in 2009; runner-up finishes at the 2010 FCWT National Championship and the AJGA Junior at Wenatchee; fourth in the 2010 British Columbia Junior Girls' Order of Merit, and sixth at the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship with rounds of 71-75-75-69 for a six-over 290. She was her team's MVP in 2009-10 and earned Student of the Month honors in October 2010.

"Leilanie has accomplished a great deal in the short time she has been competing in national events," said Johnson, noting her earning a spot on the Canadian National Team.  "Her strengths include accuracy off the tee, excellent distance control with her irons, short game creativity and mental toughness.

"Leilanie manages her game well from tee to green and has demonstrated that she can shoot low numbers in big events.  We look for Leilanie to continue to improve all aspects of her game and be a consistent player for us next year."

Kaitlyn Oster

Oster is a versatile athlete whose golf skills drew the attention of the Idaho staff. In addition to her golf prowess, she also played soccer and basketball, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Her high school and junior golf career includes first team all-state as a sophomore and junior; three-time District Champion for the Northwest Oregon Conference; three years as a first-team all-conference choice, and member of two Liberty High School teams to finish third at state (the first state finishes in school history).

"In the recruiting process, we were drawn to Kaitlyn's high level of achievement in all aspects of her life," Johnson said., "Kaitlyn is a multi-sport athlete, and she will bring this level of athleticism and competitiveness to Idaho in the fall.

"She is highly accomplished player in her state of Oregon as well as a the top student in her class at Liberty High School."

Mary Sweeney

Sweeney is another multi-sport athlete with four letters in golf and three in hockey to her credit with her senior year of high school remaining. Her golf credentials include Minnesota Junior PGA Player of the Year, high school team captain (2009-present), Minnesota Golf Association individual and team champion, helped Woodbury High School to first state golf title (2008), competed in Battle of the Border (Minnesota vs. Wisconsin and Minnesota vs. Manitoba), all-academic award winner five times.

"She is an extremely gifted player with excellent golf fundamentals," Johnson said. "Her length off the tee and mental toughness are two of her greatest strengths on the course.

"Mary has shown tremendous improvement in recent years, and we are excited to help her develop her game at the college level."
