DENVER - Idaho sophomore men's tennis player Abid Akbar was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Month for November, the conference announced Wednesday morning.

Akbar, a sophomore from Islamabad, Pakistan (Roots School), went a combined 6-1 in singles and doubles matches for the month. Akbar battled his way into the semifinals of the singles Gold Flight division at the Pacific Northwest Intercollegiate on Nov. 5-7, posting a 3-1 record. He also teamed up with Jake Knox to win the Gold doubles bracket, going 3-0 against teams from Eastern Washington, Oregon and Washington. Akbar and Knox claimed the doubles title after defeating Washington's duo of Max Manthou and Matt Stith, 8-4.

"Abid has been working on his physical strength and it is starting to pay off," Idaho men's tennis coach Jeff Beaman said. "If he continues this hard work over the break he can do great things this spring. It was great to see how he meshed with Jake as a doubles team. They had never played together but had great on court chemistry and energy and those guys could be a strong pairing for this spring season."

Fresno State's Bianca Modoc was the WAC women's tennis Player of the Month.
