Vandals Win

Idaho wins home opener over Grand Canyon

MOSCOW, Idaho – A second half flurry helped push Idaho (1-1) past Grand Canyon (0-2), 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at a blustery Guy Wicks Field.

"Conditions can be a little dodgy out here on the Palouse, the wind picked up today," said head coach Derek Pittman.  "We knew we were going to be going against the win in the first half, we had to be able to survive that.  I thought out players did an excellent job defending.  We made the one mistake on the goal we gave up, losing our mark, but we'll fix that.  But then our players came out with the right mentality and picked up a lot of shots in the second half.  We played hard and aggressive and finished the game off."

Megan Goo scored the game winner in the 74th minute, heading in a rebound.  Madison Moore got the play started by sending in a fantastic cross toward the six-yard box.  The Lopes' keeper came out to make a play, but Kayla Watanabe challenged in the air.  After a deflection, Goo followed it up with a neat header into the back of the net.

Idaho would add some insurance in the 79th, with Josilyn Daggs scoring her first career goal.  Daggs opened the play with a long throw to Sophia French who settled and found Alex Chambers.  Chambers sent the ball back out to Daggs who lofted in a ball that caught just the right amount of wind and sailed over the keeper into the back of the net.

679 fans made their way out to Guy Wicks to cheer on the Vandals, the highest attendance under Pittman.

Idaho opened up the scoring in the 22nd minute on a free kick.  Kavita Battan drew a foul just outside the corner of the box, leading to an Elexis Schlossarek free kick.  Schlossarek sent in a low ball to a cutting Olivia Baggerly who made easy work of it, scoring her first of the year.

Grand Canyon leveled the score in the 29th minute on a corner kick.  After the ball bounced around the box, Madison Cox was able to get a good foot on it for the goal.

Idaho outshot Grand Canyon 17-6, including 12-3 in the second half.

Idaho takes on Gonzaga at Guy Wicks Field on Friday at 5 p.m. for its final non-conference home game of the season.  Check back with GoVandals.com ahead of the game for more information.
