Vandals Get Weekend Sweep

Defeat Boise State on Sunday afternoon

BOISE, Idaho – Kavita Battan picked a great time to score her first goal of the season, helping lift Idaho (3-2-2) past Boise State (1-6-0), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.  The win is the first for Idaho in Boise since 2003, and caps off the first non-conference road weekend sweep for Idaho since 2010.

"Just a great win today for the Vandals," said head coach Derek Pittman.  "Really, really proud of them for grinding out a victory on the road.  Kavita getting on the scoresheet, just being scrappy in the box, I'm really proud of her.  But again, another total team performance by our entire group defending a very good Boise State team and finding a way to get a result."

Battan got the Vandals on the board in the 21st minute to lift Idaho to victory.  Josilyn Daggs sent in one of her long throws toward the box and, after a failed clearance attempt, Battan gathered, turned and fired into the back of the net.

"The thing about Kavita is that there are a lot of things that she does that don't show up on the scoresheet," said Pittman.  "I'm just happy she stuck with it and found a way to get a score today.  I thought we were dangerous early on with our throws and set pieces and getting at them on the counterattack."

Summer Kaneshiro stepped into the starting lineup for the Vandals and had a solid day across the board.

"The nice thing is, with our depth, Summer was ready to jump right in," Pittman said.  "She did an excellent job on Friday night at Seattle U and she did another excellent job tonight.  I'm really proud of her.  She's finding her way in the game and doing what we need her to do."

Idaho saw some success on the counterattack in the second half, with the Broncos pressing to level the score.  The freshmen up top, Alex Chambers and Myah Merino, gave the Vandals some great minutes off the bench, keeping the pressure on the Broncos' back line.

"This first six or seven games we've been looking for the right combination," said Pittman.  "It was nice to see Kavita and Kayla Watanabe get in a groove and a little bit of a rhythm on Friday and continue it today.  And it's nice to have those two freshmen, Alex and Myah, coming off the bench to keep the energy high and also have the threat of scoring goals.  They're not just out there to slow the game down, they're actually out there to keep the tempo up.  They did a good job."

Torell Stewart had another solid night, making five saves and earning her second shutout of the season.
