Quarterback
Matt Linehan thinks the Vandals took an important step in getting back to their winning ways.
Â
Idaho raced out to an early lead in Saturday's game against Louisiana-Monroe, which Linehan said helped the team feel comfortable and confident.
Â
"To build that lead early, it's definitely more fun to be playing with a lead than it is behind," he said.
Â
The Vandals won 31-23 against the Warhawks in the Kibbie Dome. A few heartbreaking losses early this season put Idaho in a tough spot — win, or risk bowl eligibility.
Â
"It's good for us to get back on track," he said. "We were all playing for each other. It's about as good as it gets and our confidence level is getting there. When you start losing, it's difficult. We know our work is cut out for us."
Â
Idaho head coach
Paul Petrino credited his players for sticking to their convictions through a rough couple games.
Â
"Sometimes when things aren't going great you second guess yourself, and everyone second guesses you. I think what you have to do is stick to what you believe in, who you are," Petrino said. "Our guys have been able to do that."
Â
Linehan and
Ed Hall spoke earlier in the week about the intense focus required to perform well with their backs against the wall. They also felt confident it would bring out the best in the team.
Â
Petrino said this win will help the team build momentum into the last few weeks of the season.
Â
"They deserve it," he said. "That's the biggest thing. They just needed to keep fighting and it was great to see them come out of there. That was a beautiful team win today."
Â
But now there is a new challenge. Idaho can't celebrate for too long. The team plays on a short week at a stout Troy team Thursday, in Alabama.
Â
"We'll enjoy what we can for the time being, but my focus is already on Thursday," Linehan said. "When you have a short turnaround like this, it's important to shift your focus as quick as possible. I think the best part about a short week is we get to go right back out there."
Â
Petrino said he's excited to have a happy night.
Â
"We just have to relax tonight. Watch some football, regroup and get ready for Troy," he said.
